5000 human proteins on biotech database

A unique online database listing antibodies against 5000 human proteins has been launched by biotechnology company, Proteintech Group, Inc.

A global biotechnology company with its European headquarters at Manchester Science Park, Proteintech develop and manufacture monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies as well as provide custom-made antibodies, which are produced to order from clone DNA.

Proteintech currently have antibodies against one third of the Human Genome Project and hope to have an antibody for every protein by 2015.

Last month (October) ProteinTech, which was founded in 2002, launched  its new P-View* Reference Database, an online resource containing all the preliminary data Proteintech has amassed throughout the development and testing of its antibody products over the past seven years.

Dr Jason Li, Managing Director at Proteintech, explained: “Proteintech is one of just a handful of companies in the world who not only manufactures antibodies but also markets and sells those antibodies themselves, rather than using a reseller.

“As we are involved in the entire development of an antibody, from creation through to completion, we have generated a mass of original data on protein expressions, including immunoprecipitation, immunoflouresence, immunohistochemistry and Western Blot.

“The P-View Reference Database provides a way for us to share that in-depth knowledge with our clients in research institutes and biotechnology companies across the globe, aiding therapeutic target selection and assisting drug development,” he stated.

Currently the P-View database contains the results for 5000 different antibodies against 5000 human proteins but Dr Li plans to develop the resource even further to include data for all human proteins identified through the Human Genome Project.

In addition, Dr Li hopes to encourage his clients to add their own research and results to the database, creating an even bigger knowledge resource.

“The overall aim of the database is for Proteintech to build a strong relationship with its clients, acting in essence as a silent partner for companies and academic institutions involved in bioresearch,” Dr Li concluded.
